A Few Myths About Language Learning

Kid learningMyth - Kids magically absorb language, and then that window of opportunity disappears as we get older.

Fact - Yes, kids have a natural ability to soak up language, and it is pretty amazing.  But, that window doesn't close on us as we get older.  Adults learn differently than kids, and a big reason for this is the environment and mental barriers we find around us.  We can learn a lot from kids about language learning, and put this knowledge to use for ourselves!

Old way of language learningMyth - Studying a language means pouring over grammar books, repeating monotonous drills over and over again, and taking difficult tests.

Fact - Sure, this is the old way of learning a language.  Ask yourself this - Did it work?  Probably not.  The best way to learn a language is to experience it, to live with it.  Drilling vocabulary and studying grammar help you KNOW a language, but not speak it.  On this site, we emphasize immersion.  The only way to master a language is to surround yourself with it.  And remember - it's all about communication.

American flagMyth - Americans (or whatever your nationality is!) are bad at learning languages.  It's just not in our culture.

Fact - There are lots of cultural factors that determine how likely you are to learn a language.  But, this doesn't mean that a certain group of people are "bad at languages."  It is all a matter of how you study and how you think about the language.  Language study isn't all about words and grammar - it's also about culture and social interaction.

I can't learn another languageMyth - I can't possibly learn another language!

Fact - The #1 problem people face studying languages is not grammar, pronunciation or spelling.  It's confidence.  The truth is that anybody can learn any language on Earth... it's just a matter of knowing HOW to study, and being motivated to speak and understand.

We hope this site will be helpful to language learners out there, and maybe inspire someone who is thinking about learning a new language to go for it.  Have a look around and drop us any questions or comments you might have!
